There are moments in sport where the result tells only part of the story. This past weekend in Montevideo was one of those for the South Africa Women’s Sevens.
Finishing third at the HSBC SVNS 2 Montevideo, the Springbok Women did exactly what they came to do. They booked their place at the World Championship, and in doing so, showed just how far this group has come.
For head coach Cecil Afrika, the takeaway was clear. This was a squad that earned their success.

Across five matches, South Africa claimed three wins, with their performances against China, Brazil and Kenya standing out not just for the results, but for the way they controlled those games. Defensive intensity became a defining feature, turning pressure into opportunity and forcing mistakes from their opponents.
It was not perfect, and Afrika was honest about that.
A slow start against Spain cost them early, going down 15-0 before narrowly losing 15-14. On the final day, Argentina punished a late dip in intensity, scoring three second-half tries to take a 22-10 win. Two halves of rugby, as Afrika put it, that did not meet their standard.
But what matters is what came in between.
This is a team growing in confidence and depth. The introduction of new faces like Shanidinè Bezuidenhout added fresh energy, while players such as Lerato Makua continue to evolve, stepping into bigger roles and proving they belong on the international stage.
It speaks to a broader shift within the system. This is no longer just about results in the moment. It is about building a squad capable of sustaining performance at the highest level.
With qualification secured, attention now turns to São Paulo and the final leg of the HSBC SVNS 2 Series. There is still work to be done, and Afrika knows it. Back-to-back tournaments test not just skill, but recovery, mindset and squad management.

The bigger picture, though, is already taking shape.
Alongside Argentina, South Africa has done enough to confirm their place in the next phase of the series, with upcoming stops in Hong Kong, Valladolid and Bordeaux now firmly in sight. It is a reward for consistency, resilience and a willingness to keep building, even when things are not perfect.
For KDT Sportsline, the insight is simple. This is a team learning how to win, but more importantly, learning how to compete.
And that is what will matter most on the world stage.
