Sabelo Ndwandwe walked away with the IBO All Africa Featherweight title after a split-decision victory over Lindo Khuzwayo, bringing a sold-out Knockout Chaos 2 to a dramatic close.
South African boxing had plenty to celebrate on Saturday night as Aquila Boxing Promotions delivered eight bouts, emerging talent, experienced campaigners and a new continental champion at Knockout Chaos 2 in Johannesburg.
The headline belonged to Sabelo Ndwandwe.
Facing Lindo Khuzwayo for the vacant IBO All Africa Featherweight title, Ndwandwe was pushed through the full 10 rounds in a closely contested main event that ultimately required the judges to separate the two fighters.
When the scorecards were read, it was Ndwandwe who got the split decision and, with it, the IBO All Africa Featherweight crown.
It was a fitting conclusion to a night built around competitive matchmaking and creating meaningful opportunities for South African fighters.
And while only one man could leave with the belt, both walked away with recognition for what they produced inside the ring.
Aquila Boxing Promotions promoter Kevin Lerena awarded Ndwandwe and Khuzwayo R20,000 each in performance bonuses following their 10-round battle, rewarding what proved to be one of the standout contests of the night.
For Lerena, the fight represented much of what he wants the Knockout Chaos platform to deliver: competitive fights, opportunities for local boxers to move their careers forward and an environment where strong performances are rewarded.
Eight fights, plenty of action
The action started with Matthew Petersen securing victory over Tshegofatso Matlala in their four-round Middleweight contest.
At Featherweight, Tumelo Mapahlele defeated Luke Hendrikz over six rounds, before Simnikiwe Bongco got the better of veteran Denis Mwale in their four-round Super Welterweight bout.
Liam Fox took the win against Dino Malajika in a four-round Catchweight contest, while Gary van Staden emerged victorious against Nicolas Kasongo Nzengu after six rounds at Super Middleweight.
Kaine Fourie defeated Faraday Mukandile in their six-round Welterweight contest, before two experienced names in South African boxing, Jackson Chauke and Gideon Buthelezi, met over six rounds at Junior Bantamweight.
Chauke took the victory, leaving the stage clear for Ndwandwe and Khuzwayo to battle for continental honours in the main event.
The Knockout Clock raises the stakes
Winning wasn’t the only incentive on offer at Knockout Chaos 2.
The promotion’s Knockout Clock added another dimension to several fights, with individual fight sponsors putting additional prize money on the line and giving fighters another reason to make an impression.
Mapahlele added R10,000 to his night’s earnings courtesy of KC Pinnacle Holdings, while Fox received an additional R5,000 courtesy of Nasty ENRG.
Van Staden earned a R25,000 bonus courtesy of Parque & The Arch, while Fourie received R20,000 courtesy of Tigris X Discovery.
The concept provided something different for both the fighters and fans, while allowing commercial partners to play a direct role in rewarding performances inside the ring.
Lerena then added another R40,000 to the night’s prize money following the main event, splitting it equally between Ndwandwe and Khuzwayo in recognition of their performance.
Building something bigger for SA boxing
Knockout Chaos 2 was about more than Saturday night’s results.
The event capped off a busy fight week for Aquila Boxing Promotions, which included a packed media conference at Lerena’s new RPM Performance Gym and the official weigh-in before attention turned to fight night.
By Saturday, the venue was sold out.
For a promotion looking to build momentum in South African boxing, that matters.
But perhaps more important was the composition of the card itself.
Emerging fighters shared the bill with experienced campaigners. Sponsors were directly involved in rewarding performances. Two unbeaten featherweights were prepared to put their records on the line for a title rather than protect them.
It points towards the kind of boxing environment Aquila Boxing Promotions is trying to create, one where competitive fights matter and local fighters have platforms on which to build their careers.
Knockout Chaos 2 ultimately ended with exactly what a fight night should deliver: compelling contests, a packed crowd and a new champion.
For Sabelo Ndwandwe, the night ended with gold around his waist.
For Aquila Boxing Promotions, the focus now shifts to what comes next as the promotion continues to establish Knockout Chaos as a fixture on the South African boxing calendar.
